Benefits Of A Country Moving From A Economic Economy

â€Å"Discuss the extent to which a country moving from a centrally planned economy to a more market driven economy is in the interest of both consumers and producers†. A transitional economy is an economy which has previously had a centrally planned economic system of resource allocation and is now allowing market forces, such as demand, supply, price and free enterprise to operate in at least parts of the economy. A centrally planned economy, that is also called command economy, is an economic system in where the country’s government operates production facilities. Free market economy is an economic system where prices and wages are set by unrestricted competition between businesses, without government regulation or fear of monopolies. Countries like: Poland, Vietnam, Albania, Czech Republic, China and most of CIS countries that used to be a part of communism area can be taken as an example of countries that have moved from centrally planned economy to a more market driven economy. This essay is going to focus mainly on China, where both consumers and producers gain some benefits from a transitional economy. China’s transition from central planning has assumed a trajectory quite different from that of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. The idea of this transition is that prices will regulate themselves. Supply and demand will reach the point of equilibrium where the most money will be made. However, what is good for businesses not always good for customers. The Cradle I Am Naafash, Son Of Urmine And Lemefess

ORIGINS 1.0 I am Naafash, son of Urmine and Lemefess. Wanderers of the cradle, that have seen the Kingdom of Assur, will talk of its beauty, its glory and of its awe. I am witness to this great empire, and these are my chronicles. ORIGINS 1.1 I was raised on the outskirts of Assur, the youngest of three, I was always the trouble-maker in the family. By the time I was five, I was able to pick and grow corn. My family had been corn farmers, for as long as our ancestors account, and while we were not as respected as the families of military leaders, we played an important role in society. Our vast corn fields helped feed the increasing population of the city of Assur. We were a religious family, and like farming I was also taught of†¦show more content†¦ORIGINS 1.2 The summers in Assur were incredibly hot and dry, and I had spent the day working ambitiously with my father and brother irrigating the crop so it would not die. The sun had set for some time now, so we decided to call it a day and go inside for dinner. While we were working on the farm my mother and sister had been cooking in the kitchen in order to feed a household of five. My father had sat down at the head of the table and called for my sister to bring him his liquor, My father was a mean drunk, laughing at himself, demanding from my mother and my sister, insulting my brother and I, while we sat in silence. Most nights this would carry on until he had drank himself to sleep, but that night he order my mother to bring himself a fifth cup of liquor. When she told him the bottle was empty, he grabbed her viciously by the hair. â€Å"Well why don’t you go buy some more?† my father said, throwing her a coin. He then struck my mother across the face twice, and on the sec ond time she fell to the floor. My sister rushed to help her up, â€Å"sit down!† he commanded. My brother and I were furious, but what could we do? It was the law, he was allowed to hit my mother as he so pleased. So I offered to go into the city to get him his liquor, and my brother agreed to watch over my mother and sister in the meantime. Globalization and Its Impact on Economic-Free-Samples for Students

Question: Discuss abouts the International Business Environment. Answer: The term globalization can be explained as a process of interaction and integration which takes place between the organizations and governments of the different countries for the purpose of international trade and investment. The concept of globalization has affected world economy at large as the concept of globalization has facilitated the movement of goods, services, resources and technology. Globalization has promoted trade by eliminating the segmentation of market due to national boundaries. It has benefited every economy of the world by promoting more efficient markets, reducing conflicts among the nations, better allocation of the wealth around the world and increase in the level of competition (Abdullah, 2011). It has established a link between the political, economic, social and technological aspects of the different nations. Expansion of the global markets has promoted economic activities related to the exchange of the goods, services and resources. It has played a vital rol e in removing the cross-border trade barriers and promoting trading in the global market. Globalization has resulted in the growth of the economy of developing nations along with the increase in income (Kuepper, 2017). Picture of the world economy has changed due to the implementation of the concept of globalization. The impact of globalization can be seen on the every aspect of the economy. World economy represents the different sectors which have got affected due to globalization. Companies have faced challenges as well as gained opportunities due to the globalization. It has encouraged trade at international level which has taken the world towards a borderless world. A wide reach is there for the organizations as they have a world market for operating their operations. Positive as well as negative aspects of globalization have been identified which have affected every economy (Rao, 2013). With the concept of globalization, there has been a rise in the number of MNCs. Developing economies are attracting the MNCs due to the opportunities available in the developing economies. Multinational companies are in the search of attractive markets which provided better resources at cheaper prices and reducing the cost involved in the operations of the company. Globalization has provided benefit to the companies as well as to the host country. MNCs have played a crucial role for the economy of the developed as well as developing country (Surugiua Surugiu, 2015). MNCs not only bring funds or financial resources in the host country but also bring technology, employment opportunities, developing communication, increase in the income level, high-level management and competitiveness. There are few disadvantages associated with the MNCs and these disadvantages include decrease in the investment after decrease in the potential, canalization of the profits and increase in unemployment when MNCs moves towards other countries with better opportunities (Samimi Jenatabadi, 2014). There are various reasons which are responsible for the emergence of the MNCs. These reasons include minimization of cost, search for the raw material, exploring foreign markets for better growth opportunities and in the search of knowledge (Mottaleba Kalirajanb, 2010). Borderless trading has promoted MNCs to expand the area of operation. MNCs consider different factors before drawing a decision for expansion of the business in a country. MNCs consider the availability of the resources, workforce and availability of resources at a cheaper cost (Haller, 2016). Foreign direct investment is an important source of finance for every economy. Many countries face challenges due to the lack of the investment which has affected the growth and development process of the economy. Foreign direct investment plays a crucial part for every economy as it increases the flow of investment in a country contributing to the growth of the economy (Bakan Yildirimci, 2015). There is a direct link between the foreign direct investment and economic growth. Developing economies are adopting foreign direct investment as a measure for increasing the investment in the country. FDI provide support to the country by developing the technology used, better market and development of the knowledge and skills of the human resource (Kardos, 2014). The role of FDI has increased in every economy as it promotes domestic saving and attainment of a better economic growth rate. In the recent years, FDI has gained much importance due to the various benefits it provides to the host country. FDI ensures better employment opportunities, restructuring of the industrial sector and technological advancements (World Economic Forum, 2013). MNCs have gained success by investing in the developing economies which have provided growth and expansion opportunities to them. The importance of FDI is increasing due to the increasing need of financial support for a country for the development of the economy. MNCs are the investment bodies which invest in the other countries with a motive to gain the advantage of the available opportunities in those countries (Mosia, 2012). For ensuring the execution of operations of MNCs within the legal framework, various rules and regulations have been formulated by the government of every country. Globalization has promoted FDI which has resulted in the growth of the economy. In the year 2015, there was a rise in the flow of FDI by 25 % at the global level (Kukaj Ahmeti, 2016). Economic integration can be explained as a position where different companies mutually agree on combining policies related to business, fiscal and monetary. Economic integration took place for the removal of the illegal and unethical practices which can affect the nation. Economic integration of the nations is an important part of globalization. The purpose of economic integration of nations is to ensure that no discriminatory practices are affecting the economy of a nation. Economic integration ensures that fair trade practices are promoted among the different economies of the world. Discriminatory practices have acted as a trade barrier which has affected trade process at large (Borbugulov, 2014). Separate economies of the different nations are combined together for the purpose of forming a large economic region. There are various benefits of economic integration of nations for the member countries which promotes sustainable development and economic growth (Naveh, et. al., 2012). These benefits include generation of better employment opportunities, trade creation, diversion of trade leading to welfare and political support among the nations. Economic integration of nations have few disadvantages associated with it which include trading blocs which restrict the non-member countries, diversion of trade which affects the non-member countries and affect the national sovereignty (Mwasha, 2015). The said statement is true as globalisation of business has become more regional than global. In the fast changing environment, businesses are becoming more regional rather than global as international businesses are entering into emerging markets and covering the different markets in a better manner. This regionalization has benefited different companies and enhanced the capabilities of the companies for gaining the advantage of the available resource in the regional areas. Globalization is an important aspect of the economies of the different nations as it has enhanced the process of trade practices among the different nations. Regionalization is an integral part of globalization. The concept of globalization is applied over a country so as to enhance the economic condition of the economy as a whole rather than on an individual region. Regionalization has promoted independence on the regions and eliminating interdependence among the different regions. It has acted as an initial ste p for the effective implementation of the concept of globalization. It must be promoted for the promotion of the globalized world (Mansfield Solingen, 2010). Different regions need to adopt regionalization for coping with the challenges faced due to the globalization. It has prepared the regions for adopting aspects of the global market. It has provided secure market and economic strengths to the different regions. Due to the increase in the area of global market states have faced conditions of disinvestment and reinvestment which create an impact on the economic condition of the nation. Thus, this results in loss of the control of different regions on the economy of the nation. These are the reasons behind the process of more regionalization rather than globalization. For example, North America Free Trade Agreement has been formulated with a motive to stabilization of the political and economic policies of the regions (Collins, 2010). The world economy is lacking the global unity as different regions faces challenges due to globalization. Different regions of the economy face competition due to the globalization. This rise in the level of competition has affected the growth and expansion of the regional areas. Regionalization has provided safety to the regional areas from the globalization and its adverse impacts on certain regional areas. Regional strategies have enabled nations to compete with other nations in a better manner and performing well at the global level (Heuillard, 2013). It has promoted the structural and economic reforms at the national level. It has prepared the companies to operate at the global level. Conflicts may arise between the regions due to the use of different concepts which must be dealt in an effective manner. For example, Allegro is operating in Poland which is a local or regional e-commerce site. eBay launched in Poland at the regional level for enhancing its customer base but it got shut down after few years. In this case, Allegro has overcome the challenge it has faced due to the global company (Mansfield Solingen, 2010). It has acted as an alternative platform on which development of norms and practices have taken place. A region is a geographic unit which exists in a social system. There has been a rise in the FDI in the regionalized areas. For example, Wal-Mart is an international organisation and for the purpose of enhancing the coverage of regional areas, its regional President is performing the communication and monitoring role. The motive behind performing this role is to ensure that this is not creating an impact on the resource allocation process and strategies used by the company (Collins, 2010). Globalization has formed a base for regionalization as globalization has promoted the movement of the resources and technology from one nation to another. Companies are focusing on the regional areas so as to take advantage of the opportunities available to it in the regional areas. It would have been impossible to utilize the resources available in a region without globalization. International organisations or MNCs are moving towards regionalization as they are capable of using the resources available in the regional area in a better manner. Regionalization has enhanced the cooperation and support from the political and economic aspects of the International companies (Heuillard, 2013). Companies are focusing on thinking regional rather than global. Different regions have different needs and demands which can be met by analysing the regional markets. Different resources are available in different regions of the nation which have motivated to invest in the regions. Regions are the division of the part or area in small segments. International companies are considering regionalization as an opportunity for the effective utilization of the resources available and covering the emerging markets of the different economies. Thus, MNCs must consider regionalization as an important element as it has the potential to enhance the performance of the companies (Heuillard, 2013). Regionalization has acted as an alternative for the cross-border economic integration and benefited to the MNCs at large level. MNCs are exploring different regions for the expansion of their business and enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness. It has been considered as one of the best solutions adopted by the global business for operating well in the host country. It has supported the process of internationalization as it is considered a process which leads towards globalization (Olayiwola David, 2013). There are various factors or forces which have helped in the regionalization of the international or global business. These factors determining the choice of regionalization include cost factors, market factors, competitive factors, technological factors, cultural factors, geographical factors and various other factors (Maha, et. al., 2009). Thus, it can be stated from the above discussion that globalisation of business is more regional than global. Regionalization has promoted cross-border economic integration which has resulted in growth of the economy of both the countries. International companies are locating regional markets for utilising the resources available and expansion of the business. Regionalization is performed on the conscious level and globalization, on the other hand, is performed on an international level. It has led the development of the different regions of the nation. MNCs are engaging in regionalized international business activities for better utilization of the financial resources available to it and gaining a competitive advantage over the competitors. The process of regionalization and globalization are complimentary to each other. MNCs are focusing on becoming more regional than global as regionalization has provided numerous benefits to the MNCs. Regionalized international business has provided the focus of MNCs on generating better profits. Regionalization has helped in establishing healthy political relationships with the political parties and bilateral trade relationships (Rugman Oh, 2010). Regionalized international business practices of the MNCs create an impact on the different strategies of the MNCs including the production strategies, marketing strategies, research and development function, human resource strategies, distribution strategies and legal strategies. MNCs enter those markets where they can reduce the cost involved in the operations for increasing efficiency of the business. There are various other reasons which are responsible for the regionalized international business (Rugman and Oh, 2012). These reasons include reduced cost, availability of resources, emerging markets for the expansion and growth of the business, generation of better revenue, the mobility of capital, freedom of trade, taxation benefits, and enhancement in the technology used and enhancement in the communication process. The major reason of the investment of MNCs in the other countries is to reduce the cost and avail the resources required for carrying out the activities of the business. The cost of the products and services offered determines the profits of the company and the chances of growth and expansion of the business (Rugman and Oh, 2012). Regionalized international business has contributed towards better utilization of the resources available with the company. The production process of the business is important as it involves the transformation of the raw material and other resources in the goods and services. MNCs are getting engaged in the regionalized international business so as to utilize the resources in a better manner (Guarino, 2010). Entering a new country by the international business provides a potential market or an emerging market where the company can offer its products and services. Various opportunities are provided to the MNCs operating in the regional area. Emerging markets are being identified and MNCs are entering these emerging markets. Regionalized international business affects the production strategies as the resources are available at cheaper prices which eliminate the additional cost of the MNCs. The opening of new markets ensures the expansion of the MNCs in an effective manner. New markets not only ensure growth and expansion of the MNCs but also ensure implementation of the effective strategies for business development. Businesses are engaged in exploring new markets for expansion and growth of the business. Regionalization has opened the gate of different regional markets for the business (Guarino, 2010). Bilateral trade relationships can be understood as the economic relationships established between two countries. In this dynamic business environment, it is vital for countries to enter into bilateral trade relationships. It is not possible to restrict the economic activities as these economic activities ensure economic development of the nations. The concept of globalization has formed a base for the establishment of the bilateral trade relationships between the different nations (Guarino, 2010). Establishing bilateral trade relationships have helped in establishing trade relationships between the developed countries and developing countries. Bilateral trade relationships have resulted in the development of the economy along with a high growth rate. There are various advantages of bilateral trade relationships which include generation of high employment opportunities, economies of scale, cost benefit and development of the economy. Bilateral trade relationships have led towards the growth of the economy of the developed and developing nations. Enforcement is done of more than 200 bilateral and regional trade agreements. (Economy watch, 2010). International businesses are operating in the different regions of the host country. Globalization has not only enhanced the trade activities between different nations but also enhances the political relationship between the different nations. This increase in the global trade activities has helped in developing healthy political relationships between the different nations of the world (Economy watch, 2010). It is important for nations to develop a healthy relationship among the nations for promoting fair trade practices. MNCs are investing in the nations where opportunities are visible to them. For improving the cross-border trade practices and healthy political relationships among the nations, various agreements are prepared. These agreements promote fair trade among the nations and ensure that no discriminatory practices are taking place which affects the interest of a nation. Different countries are coordinating with each other for conducting business operations in a better way. Trade agreements are being entered by the government of different countries for encouraging fair trade among the different nations. Regionalization has enhanced the political relationship between different countries as international companies are complying with the rules and regulations of the regions (Hnt, 2008). Thus, from the above discussion, it can be concluded that concept of regionalization and globalization plays crucial role for an economy. Globalization has provided various opportunities to the companies so as to operate on an international level and to cover larger areas. It has enhanced the chances of growth and survival of the companies. Economies of different nations have taken advantage of the concept of globalization as this concept has resulted in growth and development of the different economies of the world. MNCs have utilized this concept for reducing the cost involved in the production process as well availing various resources. Another important concept for the current business environment is FDI. Foreign direct investment has increased as MNCs or international companies are investing in the developing countries for generating better results or outcomes. Regionalization has also increased as MNCs are segmenting different regions for utilizing the resources available in a better manner. Regionalization is an integral part of the concept of globalization which has helped in the development of different regions of the economy. Cross-border trade activities have contributed towards the development of the different economies. Government and various bodies are working for the purpose of ensuring the fair operations of the companies. What’s the Scoop Behind Best-Sellers - The Writers For Hire

WHAT’S THE SCOOP BEHIND BEST-SELLERS? In 1895, the literary journal The Bookman launched the first â€Å"bestseller list† in the United States. The small monthly magazine stopped running its lists in 1918 and then went under in 1933. By which point The New York Times had already begun to fuel the flames of our fascination with bestsellers. Today, few have likely heard of The Bookman – but we’d be hard-pressed to find someone unfamiliar with the weekly New York Times Book Review. Since its 1931 introduction, the NYT Best Seller list has changed over the years. Today, we’re really looking at several different lists based on categories and genres, and included titles are even separated by â€Å"type† of format like hardcover, paperback, or electronic. While there are certainly other such lists, NYT’s compilation (let’s just call it The List from now on) has become something of an icon, the â€Å"gold standard† in the overcrowded literary marketplace. Congrats†¦ with a Caveat Appearing on The List has become a badge of honor for authors around the world. And why wouldn’t it be? This powerhouse proves the popularity of a literary work. Right? Unfortunately, that’s debatable. The List is all based on a complicated algorithm that the newspaper even admits is something of a trade secret – and has caused ongoing controversy over the years. Actual book sales are only one part of this equation. In fact, a 1983 legal argument unveiled the subjective nature of â€Å"bestsellers† when representatives of the newspaper explained that The List is â€Å"not mathematically objective.† Which basically means that The List is simply a popularity contest. A very powerful popularity contest. It’s even influenced the book sales and how books are sold. In the 1960s and 1970s, the chain bookstores B. Dalton, Crown Books, and Waldenbooks took hold of the market by focusing on titles named to The List. They relied on the promotion that The List provided – but this marketing strategy also gave further credence to The List by encourage sales of whatever The List claimed was hot. In the early 2000s, a study by Stanford professor Alan Sorensen revealed that book buyers are definitely swayed by The List and that new or unknown authors absolutely benefit from being named to The List. How Do I Get There? Do you still have your heart set on earning a coveted spot? The requisites that might help your work catch NYT’s eye are, unfortunately, a bit daunting to say the least†¦ and highly unrealistic for most writers. 1. Work with a traditional publisher. Because The List still doesn’t readily recognize self-published titles, your only way in is through a publishing house. Finding a publisher, in itself, can be a challenge. 2. Score 10,000 presales. Unknown authors must sell at least this amount through recognized book stores (your family can’t just buy 10,000 copies from your publisher). This means you need to do a ton of leg work and self-promotion to create your audience before your book release. 3. Avoid the competition. Determine your book release date that doesn’t coincide with the mass release of the sequel in a widely successful title. Your publisher should know when there’s a â€Å"down time† in publishing to make sure you have less competition and greater visibility in the marketplace. 4. Buy your spot. If you’re an author who has the financial means, you can enter into an agreement with a firm whose services will guarantee that you’re a bestseller. Such firms charge thousands of dollars to basically purchase many, many copies of your book ahead of your publication date to create the spike in presales that earns you a bestseller berth. The List claims to apply a methodology that specifically weeds out such â€Å"artificial† sales surges, but these tricky firms circumvent the methodology by creating streams of organic-looking individual purchases. 5. Consider different lists. The Wall Street Journal, for example, publishes combined lists that track point-of-sale book data by title from more than 16,000 locations across the country to represent some 85% of book sales – and includes all print and e-book formats from traditional and nontraditional publishers. This is a much more realistic indication of a book’s popularity. Getting pegged for this list usually takes 3,000-5,000 sales – again, an easier mark to hit than the NYT â€Å"requirement† – and it might even act as a catalyst for your book sales, catapulting you into a coveted NYT spot. Stick to Your Story So take heart: If you haven’t been named a bestseller, that doesn’t mean you’re not an author or that your book will never reach strong sales. In fact, as agent-turned-author J. E. Fishman explains, â€Å"A book that never hits a bestseller list can outsell a book that does. How is that possible? Because the bestseller list doesn’t measure aggregate sales; it measures sales velocity. So a book that sells 10,000 copies in one week might make the New York Times list while a book that sells 10,000 copies per month for three years never does.† Keep in mind that The List specifically figures weekly sales numbers into its convoluted equation, not total sales. A title with a surge in sales for one given week could earn a spot, while another consistent seller (that winds up selling more copies over time) never makes the list because sales are at a slower pace. But, again, bear in mind that actual sales are just one piece of hard data that accompany the subjective whims of the NYT compilers. Consider the advice from four-time bestseller Tucker Max. Don’t â€Å"chase bestseller lists, but instead focus on the business and personal goals for [your] book,† he says. â€Å"What matters is not selling copies or hitting a list, it’s the impact your book has with your intended audience.†

Understanding Division Of Labor

Understanding Division Of Labor Division of labor refers to the range of tasks within a social system. This can vary from everyone doing the same thing to each person having a specialized role. It is theorized that humans have divided labor since as far back as our time as hunters and gatherers  when tasks were divided based mainly on age and gender.  Division of labor became an important part of society after the Agricultural Revolution when humans had a food surplus for the first time. When humans werent spending all of their time acquiring food they were allowed to specialize and perform other tasks. During the Industrial Revolution, labor that was once specialized was broken down for the assembly line. However, the assembly line itself can also be seen as a division of labor.   Theories About Division of Labor   Adam Smith, a Scottish social philosopher and economist, theorized that humans practicing division of labor allows humans to be more productive and excel faster. Emile Durkheim, a French scholar in the 1700s, theorized  that specialization was a way for people to compete in larger societies. Criticisms of Gendered Divisions of Labor Historically, labor, whether inside the home or outside of it, was highly gendered. It was thought that tasks were meant for either men or women, and that doing the work of the opposite gender went against nature. Women were thought to be more nurturing and therefore jobs which required  caring for others, like nursing or teaching, were held by women. Men were seen as stronger and given more physically  demanding jobs. This kind of labor divide was oppressive to both men and women in different ways. Men were assumed incapable of tasks like raising children and women had little economic freedom. While lower class women generally always had to have jobs the same as their husbands in order to survive, middle-class and upper-class women were not allowed to work outside the home. It wasnt until WWII that American women were encouraged to work outside the home. When the war ended, women didnt want to leave the workforce. Women liked being independent,  many of them also enjoyed their jobs far more than household chores. Unfortunately for those women who liked working more than chores, even now that its normal for men and women in relationships to both work outside the home, the lion share of household  chores are still performed by women. Men are still viewed by many to be the less capable parent. Men who are interested in jobs like preschool teacher are often viewed with suspicion because of how American society still genders labor. Whether its women being expected to hold down a job and clean the house or men being seen as the less important parent, each is an example of how sexism in the  division of labor hurts everyone.

Arbitration Opinion & Award Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Arbitration Opinion & Award - Essay Example Davis claims that Kevin refused to follow the orders that were given to her by her supervisor. At the same time he neglected the patient who was uncomfortable on the ground. He chose to go at home violating the mission of the hospital of proving care. The union claimed that Kevin suffered from back pain and that he could not carry the patient. His representative Whitehead claimed that the patient was obese that he could jeopardize Kevin’s health. According to the labor Agreement employees are not supposed to perform unsafe work. The union claims that Kevin was given an ultimatum by her supervisor. This made Kevin to choose to go home rather than causing the problem to himself and to the patient .His problem was know by the supervisors and some co workers. According to the witness Martinez and Barber who Kevin’s co worker claims that Kevin usually has a problem with her back. This is emphasized by Him of whom he claims to have gotten injured through an accident during skiing 9 years ago. However this remains in question because of the following reasons; I. There was no documentation of the alleged back pain according to Martinez. Though Kevin was known by Martinez and Barber and other workers to be having a back pain, this claim could not be proved. He oftenly had some informal request for assistance of which the manager was not aware of. It is therefore normal for any human being to assume that this was a lie since there was no any documentation to prove the illness. II. Richard claims that there is a department in the hospital for employees to report their health problems so that they can be accommodated with their problem. Kevin was aware of the department yet he did not seek help. This shows some elements of being fishy. III. According to Richard, Kevin did not notify the HR of his condition and that he did not provide any documentation and therefore did not follow the appropriate process.Ordinrily, any man with a

Behavioral theory development Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Behavioral theory development - Research Paper Example Unlike Erikson, Freud’s theories were based upon studies of neurotic patients; Erikson’s theories were based upon studies of normal childhood. Keoke and Porterfield (2001) explain the beginning of Erikson’s observation of normal childhood development as follows: in 1902, Erickson was born in Germany to a well-off family who immigrated to Germany from Denmark; at the age of 25 years, Erickson moved to Vienna, Austria where he established a school and was fortunate to become one of Sigmund Freud’s students and colleagues. During the Hitler reign of terror, Erikson migrated to the United States where he worked with prominent anthropologists and studied two American Indian tribes called the Sioux and Yukon. Erickson’s anthropology study turned into the first empirical study on normal childhood development. The focus of the study was the early childhood development of the Sioux and Yukon children in their home and school environment compared to White Ame rican children. After a longitudinal scientific investigation focused upon the childhood development of the Sioux, Yukon, and White American cultures, including the American Welfare system, Erikson knew that it was time to establish his own theory of development which was in direct conflict to his teacher and colleague namely Freud (Keoke & Porterfield, 2001). Santrock (1997) describes Erikson’s famous eight developmental stages as follows: (a) Trust vs. Mistrust is focused upon the fetal years through the first year and ideally the child learns to get physical and emotional needs fulfilled of which must be achieved before the child will learn how to trust; (b) Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt initiate around the second year of the child’s life in which independence and the assertion of the child’s will is observed through the behavior of doing things and exploring. Erikson observed that if

Building a Wireless Sensor Network Essay Example for Free

Building a Wireless Sensor Network Essay 1.0 Introduction In the previous era, the technology application mostly using wire but now a wireless device has become common place. The definition of wireless sensor network is an application that having no wires connection on that devices. In addition, to make the system easy to monitor from a distant location, the RF 433MHz module was used. So, this project gave rise to the idea for studying details about the RF 433MHz module performance for WSN application. 1.1 Project Background Nowadays, using the wireless sensor network (WSN) technology to monitor the environment helps someone to solve the problems of deployment difficulty, high cost, and realized unmanned monitoring which is mostly used in factory, buildings, laboratory and house. This project is to study the range and performance of the RF 433MHz module for WSN application. RF 433MHz module are popular used in remote control system. This range also available to use in this area. There are two types of the RF module which is transmitter and receiver. From research, using RF 433MHz module, the data can get more accurately without any data losses with the range that given than compared to other transmission for wireless sensor network. The range that can reach by this RF module is different between outside and inside area. For inside area, it can work for 50 meters through multiple walls with an antenna, while for the outside area, it will be able for hundreds of meters. Besides that, a microcontroller such as Arduino also used in this project. Arduino that available for this project is Arduino PRO which is it has 3.3V port that will be easier to connect directly to the types of RF 433MHz module that used in this project. This project also will be studied the analysis of the data transmission by giving a few of distance between the transmitter and receiver of the RF 433MHz modules when located in the obstacles or line of sight area. Then, the data that are received will be displayed on the computer whether there are data losses or not. 1.2 Problem Statement The problem that becoming as issues right now is there is a lot of ways to send data but the problem is about the range, cost, and data losses. So, for this situation, study the performance of RF 433MHz can overcome the problem for the WSN application. 1.3 Objectives The objectives of this project are to understand the range and performance of RF 433MHz module. Moreover, exploration about the transmitting and receiving the data by using the RF 433MHz module. 1.4 Work Scope The main work scope of this project is to make sure this project will achieve the objectives. The main focus of this project:- i. To study and understanding the range of RF 433MHz module. ii. To transfer data by using RF 433MHz module. 1.5 Methodology In this project, there are three main parts. For the first part, it will be focused on the conducting the literature review and do some research more detail about the RF 433MHz module. Meanwhile, for the second part, after the software development process, the hardware development process will take over and include the testing of the project. Last part, when the hardware and software complete their part, it will be followed by testing the performance and the operation of the project to make an analysis. 1.6 Report Structure This part will explain all the flow for completing this report and project. In this report, there are five chapters. Chapter 1: Introduction This chapter will introduce the background of the project, state the problems, clear about the objectives, scope of work, planned the methodology and structure of report to make it organized. Chapter 2: Literature Review This chapter will be explained more details about all the research that have been done. Then, the summarization for the project also will be attached to this chapter to make it clear. Chapter 3: Methodology The methodology is the procedures or steps when doing this project. The simulation, analysis, and evaluation of the project will be discussed in this chapter. This method is important because from here the flow of the process for the project will be updated. Chapter 4: Expected Results The expected results in the software or hardware will be stated in this chapter. The comparisons and improvements of this project will be described here. Analysis of the results also will be discussed here. Chapter 5: Conclusion In this chapter, to make a conclusion for all the summary of this project was collected in each part can be discussed in the conclusion.

Sula by Toni Morrison Essay examples -- Black Community Racism Racist

Sula by Toni Morrison In the novel Sula, by Toni Morrison we follow the life of Sula Peace through out her childhood in the twenties until her death in 1941. The novel surrounds the black community in Medallion, specifically "the bottom". By reading the story of Sula’s life, and the life of the community in the bottom, Morrison shows us the important ways in which families and communities can shape a child’s identity. Sula not only portrays the way children are shaped, but also the way that a community receives an adult who challenges the very environment that molded them. Sula’s actions and much of her personality is a direct result of her childhood in the bottom. Sula’s identity contains many elements of a strong, independent feminist character. However, the people in Medallion do not see Sula in a positive light. When she returns to Medallion as an adult Sula is seen as evil and regarded with much fear. The reason Sula outcast from the community is specifically due to the fa ct that she is a woman who refuses to contain herself in the social norms set up for the town. She refuses to marry and frequently sleeps around. The characters that exist around Sula serve as a point to compare the different ways the community treats those who are different. Specifically the way the characters, Shadrack and Hannah are treated by the community can be compared to the way the community treats Sula. In one way or another, Sula, Shadrack, and Hannah are outcast from the community in the bottom. Shadrack and Hannah however are not regarded with near as much fear or resentment the town feels towards Sula. The difference between the way the town treats Hannah and Sula is particularly alarming. After the death of Sula’s father, Hannah has no real relationships with men. She sleeps only with the husbands of her friends and neighbors husbands. Although Hannah sleeps with married men the people in Medallion have a certain respect for her. "The men, surprisingly, never g ossiped about her. She was unquestionably a kind and generous woman..."(p 2013). Hannah has affairs with the same men over and over again. Because of this most often the wives of those men take it as a compliment when Hannah sleeps with them. Hannah is Sula’s mother and has indirectly taught a young Sula to view sex as a source of pleasure. "Seeing her step so easily into the pantry and emerge looking precisely ... ... views on life to any man. There is an imagination in Sula and an intelligence which can be seen in all her actions. This imagination allows her to look closely at the community surrounding her and rise above it. She sees herself not so much in the community but separate from it, and the town does make a separate place for Sula. She doesn’t take what is given to her, she doesn’t blindly accept the social norms the community has set for women. In the end of the novel, right before Sula dies, Nel, Sula’s old best friend, sums up why the whole community has viewed her as evil, a roach, a bitch and feared her so greatly. "You can’t do it all. You a woman and a colored woman at that. You can’t act like a man. You can’t be walking around all independent-like, doing whatever you like, taking what you want, leaving what you don’t." (p2057). Throughout the novel however, that is exactly what Sula does. She attempts to live her life the most free she can. Free from the social norms of a patriarchal community who sees a woman solely in relationship to a man. If a woman doesn’t have a relationship with a man and take up socially accepted responsibilities, she is seen as evil, inconceivable.

Introduction to Marketing Essay

Pestle stands for political, economic, social technological, legal and environmental influences. Businesses use this as part of their marketing plan procedure. Political: what is happening politically with regards to tax policies employment laws, trade restrictions, tariffs Economic: what is happening within the economy i. e. economic growth/ decline, minimum wage, unemployment, credit availability, cost of living, etc. Sociological: what is occurring socially i. e. cultural norms and expectations, health consciousness, population growth rate, career attitudes. Technological: new technologies are continually being developed. There are also changes to barriers to entry in given markets Legal: changes to legislation. This may impact employment, access to materials, resources, imports/ exports, taxation etc. Environmental: what is happening with respect to ecological and environmental aspects. A PESTLE analysis is used in business to assess the industry which an organisation is in. The PESTLE analysis looks specifically at factors which are external to the organisation which will impact on the business. This is with a view to determining the current role and status of the organisation in relation to its competitors and can be used as a marketing tool. See more: how to start an essay SWOT Analysis. A tool that identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a business. SWOT is a straightforward model that assesses what a business can and cannot do as well as its potential opportunities and threats. The method of SWOT analysis is to take the information from an environmental analysis and separate it into internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external issues (opportunities and threats). Once this is completed, SWOT analysis determines what may assist the firm in accomplishing its objectives, and what obstacles must be overcome or minimized to achieve desired results. The strengths and weaknesses are interior when it comes to a business and things that are included that could be a problem are things like buildings, the quality of their workers, the i. t systems etc. The external element focuses on the opportunities and dangers in the business. Research into the organisation is essential and required when carrying out a SWOT analaysis. By matching organisations strengths and weaknesses with the external forces. SWOT analysis brings all the proof from all the different analytical techniques used. This is a way of creating a summary which gives the basis of developing the marketing objectives and strategies or even plans. Strengths: These are the internal features of the business. A highly efficient IT system could be an example. Weaknesses: These are the internal aspects of a business. Which don’t cope well with competition? An example would be staff that are not qualified or trained properly. Opportunities: This focuses on developing the business by focusing on things such as events. An example would be new territories for a particular product or a brand new segment of a market. Threats: These are external to the organisation and its development . Which can affect the business and wreck the businesses’ performance. They can be originated by the governmental policy such as an increase in corporation tax and new law. Smart Objectives All businesses have their own objectives. They can be at different levels depending on how well the business is performance. Specific – When the business sets the objectives, they must be specific so that the workers are able to follow them businesses must ensure that the instructions are clear along the goal set. Measurable – So the businesses knows on how successful they have become and to look at any changes that would affect the profit they must do a comparison of their performance in the previous years Achievable – The business needs to think carefully if they are going to be able to achieve their goals. Realistic – The business can’t set goals unless they are realistic and that they would be able to achieve these objectives. Time – The amount of time it is going to take should be stated then this way everyone has an idea and these can get done soon as.

Internship Argumentation

Faith Rivers Dr. Gul Celkan English 1101 October 22, 2012 Internship Argumentation Internships are opportunities that many students take before graduating from college. Whether paid or unpaid, they’re beneficial to students, nonetheless. They provide experience that can’t be learned elsewhere, and also gives them an edge in comparison to students that don’t take the opportunity. Of course, internships can have their downfalls in which they may not be taken as seriously as a ‘real world’ job but the pros that internships offer outweigh the cons.As I’m naturally a clumsy person, I would feel much more content knowing that when I go to the hospital, skilled physicians are treating me. I wouldn’t feel too safe if I knew that the doctor treating me was straight out of college, and had no experience under his belt. I would question the care that I’m under. Internships are another way for students to gain priceless experience rather tha n learning only from a textbook. These students are able to work in the job market, and put their skills to use. In good timing of course! They also have the chance to watch and learn from experienced personnel.Another advantage to internships is the contacts that they make while there. They’re able to branch out under these facilities, which provide them with a network of contacts to rely on. Having the note, ‘intern at ‘x’ company’ sticks out like a green checkmark on their resume as companies appreciate this when looking at a graduates resume. It immediately makes them more competitive in the job market, and has more significance to a company. Companies know that these graduates have had similar work, and experience that they can put to good use in the company’s facility as well.Graduates are also generally prepared for the work force. These earlier interns know what they’re getting into when they’re applying for these jobs an d they’re prepared. This is useful for the organizations that they’re applying to because the companies can be assured that they’ve had some sort of training in the field before. Confidence is key! This is a popular saying and needs to be applied in this scenario. Internships provide a safety net for graduates in multiple ways. The graduates can rest assured that they have an understanding of what they’re doing, and how to apply that knowledge in the job market. It’s common that most companies hire back their interns, which is beneficial to both sides of the party. It’s beneficial to the companies because the employees have had the chance to meet the intern and work alongside them. In the same way, it’s favorable to the graduate because they’ve been able to put their knowledge to use, and have had the opportunity to work in that respected facility and get an idea of what it’s like. Despite all of the advantages that inter nships offer, the downside is that if a student takes an unpaid internship, then the student won’t find any motivation towards it.In most jobs, people work hard to keep their jobs in order to receive the reward: their paycheck. With an internship, students will just look at it as a volunteer activity and not fully appreciate it or the knowledge that it provides. The internship would just be another thing to check off of the list. Also, interns won’t receive the regular training in that job. Since companies know that the student is only interning for a select amount of time, companies won’t train as thoroughly.Additionally, the students won’t get the same work as that of a regular employee. The companies will figure that since the students are still in school and only interning, then the students won’t grasp the process of everything or won’t do it correctly. There are many opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of internships, but look ing at the facts, it’s evident that internships are extremely beneficial to students. Companies realize this as well when looking at graduates’ resumes, because these past interns are eye-catching to companies.Internships also show companies that these grads have potential working in their facility. The past interns know what they’re getting into and are knowledgeable and prepared. Comparing a student’s resume with one that did an internship compared to that of one that didn’t, the company would have more interest in the student that was an intern before. Internships provide students experience that can’t be learned from a textbook or elsewhere! Dent, Ashley. â€Å"Internship Argumentation Essay. â€Å" Macon State College. Warner Robins, GA. 2012

Concept and Importance of the Positive Thinking

Concept and Importance of the Positive Thinking Positive thinking refers to the act of directing one’s mind to constructive thoughts that deviate from negativity and that are characterized by hope and expectations for better things in life (Quilliam, 2008, p.21).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Concept and Importance of the Positive Thinking specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Its development involves constant practice and persistent efforts. Positive thinking is important in life because it helps manage and eradicate stress, gives more energy to carry out daily activities, improves relationships, creates peace of mind, fosters a healthy lifestyle and guarantees success (Farreer, 2004, p.18). In addition, it enhances personal happiness and fulfillment, gives hope of a better future and aids in time management and personal organization. Positive thinking is vital in management and eradication of stress in life. This comes from the habit of looking and handling things positively. It enables a person concentrate on things that create a better life and enables an individual let go of situations that are either wearisome and distressing (Peale, 2012, p.32). Stress comes from constant worry and frustration with life situations that do not serve a person’s purpose in life. Positive thinking leads to the realization that negative thinking creates more problems and complexities in life than are unnecessary. Positive thinkers are able to evaluate problems and come up with appropriate solutions while negative thinkers see problems and resign to fate because they consider them difficult and impossible to solve. Positivity keeps stress out of life and improves a person’s well being. Positive thinking improves relationships by making it easier to connect with other people. People hate negative thinkers because they focus their energies on the wrongs of life and rarely recognize the good present, which if acted upon, can improve life in a great way. Positive thinking helps build deeper and better relationships that are founded on trust, great understanding and support (Peale, 2003, p.54). In addition, this helps create a healthier lifestyle because being at peace with friends, family and society gives peace of mind that is important for a good life. It eradicates anxiety and fear because of the feeling of belonging and worth created by being at peace with every one (Peale, 2012, p.61). In addition, it creates a good mood that appeals and attracts others thus enhancing good relationships. Spending more time with positive people is important in creating better relationships. Good time management and organization is a direct result of positive thinking (Peiffer, 2002, p.77). The inward organization of thoughts reflects the outward organization of a person’s life. As such, if a person organizes his thoughts through positive thinking, then he is able to organize other aspects of life. This organization improves ef ficiency and leads to good time management. A positive thinker has no time to waste because all activities are planned based on time allocated for those specific activities. Good time management can be achieved through prioritizing and focusing on the most important things.Advertising Looking for essay on ethics? Let's see if we can help you! Stress and negativity drain the energy needed for life accomplishments by bringing feelings of disinterest and boredom, fatigue and create bad moods. Finally, positive thinking guarantees success because an individual is able to prioritize and focus on important things (Sasson, 2012, p.66). In addition, peace of mind improv es concentration on tasks that determine success and well-being. References Farreer, G. (2004). A Gift of Positive Thinking. New York: Andrews McMeel Publishing. Geography of the Korean Peninsula

Geography of the Korean Peninsula The Korean Peninsula is an area located in Eastern Asia. It extends south from the main part of the Asian continent for about 683 miles (1,100 km). As a peninsula, it is surrounded by water on three sides and there are five bodies of water that touch it. These waters include the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea, the Korea Strait, the Cheju Strait and Korea Bay. The Korean Peninsula also covers a total land area of 84,610 miles (219,140 km).The Korean Peninsula has been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times and several ancient dynasties and empires controlled the area. During its early history the Korean Peninsula was occupied by a single country, Korea, but after World War II, it was split into North Korea and South Korea. The largest city on the Korean Peninsula is Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, is another large city on the peninsula. Most recently the Korean Peninsula has been in the news due to growing conflicts and tensions between Nort h and South Korea. There have been years of hostilities between the two nations but on November 23, 2010, North Korea launched an artillery attack on South Korea. This was the first confirmed direct attack on South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953 (there are also claims that North Korea sunk the South Korean warship the Cheonan in March 2010 but North Korea denies responsibility). As a result of the attack, South Korea responded by deploying fighter jets and firing lasted for a short time over the Yellow Sea. Since then, tensions have remained and South Korea has practiced military drills with the United States. Topography and Geology of the Korean Peninsula About 70% of the Korean Peninsula is covered by mountains, although there are some arable lands on the plains between the mountain ranges. These areas are small however so any agriculture is confined to certain areas around the peninsula. The most mountainous regions of the Korean Peninsula are the north and east and the highest mountains are in the northern part. The highest mountain on the Korean Peninsula is Baekdu Mountain at 9,002 feet (2,744 m). This mountain is a volcano and it is located on the border between North Korea and China. The Korean Peninsula has a total of 5,255 miles (8,458 km) of coastline. The south and west coasts are also very irregular and the peninsula thus also consists of thousands of islands. In total there are about 3,579 islands off the coast of the peninsula. In terms of its geology, the Korean Peninsula is slightly geologically active with its highest mountain, Baekdu Mountain, having last erupted in 1903. In addition, there are also crater lakes in oth er mountains, indicating volcanism. There are also hot springs spread throughout the peninsula and small earthquakes are not uncommon. Climate of the Korean Peninsula The climate of the Korean Peninsula varies highly based upon location. In the south, it is relatively warm and wet because it is affected by the East Korean Warm Current, whereas the northern parts are usually much colder because more of its weather comes from northern locations like Siberia. The entire peninsula is also affected by the East Asian Monsoon and rain is very common in midsummer, and typhoons are not uncommon in the fall. The Korean Peninsulas largest cities, Pyongyang and Seoul vary also and Pyongyang is much colder (it is in the north) with an average January low temperature of 13ËšF (-11ËšC) and the average August high 84ËšF (29ËšC). The average January low temperature for Seoul is 21ËšF (-6ËšC) and the average August high temperature is 85ËšF (29.5ËšC). Biodiversity of the Korean Peninsula The Korean Peninsula is considered a biodiverse place with over 3,000 species of plants. Over 500 of these are native only to the peninsula. The distribution of species over the peninsula also varies with location, which is mainly due to the topography and climate throughout it. Thus the different plant regions are divided into zones which are called the warm-temperate, temperate and cold temperate. Most of the peninsula consists of the temperate zone. How surroundings effect people - Essay Example The setting of the story is along an Ecuadorian river where Dillard is staying alongside some Americans and guides from Ecuador. In the second book; â€Å"Our Animal rights by † Anna Quindlen, the writer is writing to express dissatisfaction about people having entered the animal habit and displacing them, just to find settlement and a place to live. The issue here is does it mean that people should always displace animals from their original habitat whenever they increase in number? According to the two pieces of art, I think that people should always learn to adapt to the surrounding that prevail in their environment. There should be peaceful co-existence between animals and people. Both parties can be of mutual help if the relationship between them is well understood and taken good care of. Dillard tries to persuade people to believe that the jungle can offer best opportunities for exploration. The jungle has a lot of adventures that people can enjoy as they take adventure, he points that every year, there are many toddlers that are eaten by the mighty and powerful anacondas but that alone doesn’t make the jungle a place not good for human survival. When people live in the environment, they are able to devise ways of peacefully co-existing with animals. The main point of attention is the attractiveness within the forest. We have a 430 pound fish trapped from the river water. This is just an example of how adventures and economical living in the jungle can be. The reader employs a rather emotional appeal just to let the readers understand that living in the jungle if not life threatening. With reference to the Napo River, she says it is a â€Å"â€Å"bowl of sweet air, a basin of greenness, and of grace, and, it would seem, of peace† (Braw 3) this kind of description is meant to show the reader that the river is kind of a something huge, wide and enormous lined with beautiful green trees. This is actually a description that would

Food Insecurity in Ethiopia - Essay Example Ethiopia has a population of approximately 75 million people, making it the second most heavily populated country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the people in Ethiopia rely on agriculture as the main means of subsistence, and the agricultural industry is controlled by smallholder agriculture. The risk of famine in Ethiopia is extremely high. With the fast increase in population, food shortage has escalated. The researcher gives some explanations on Ethiopian market, that is still weak, with extensive price fluctuations and instability. Besides fast increasing population, the causes of food insecurity include incompetence in the organisational, institutional, policy, market, and production sectors. Food security is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a condition â€Å"when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life†. Due to the complexity of the causes of famine, manifold measures are needed to le ssen or totally prevent it from occurring. To conclude, the researcher sums up that food insecurity in Ethiopia has been primarily caused by rapid growth of population, environmental destruction, and overexploitation of natural resources, recurring drought, climate change, poverty, and civil conflicts. Ethiopian governments have made an attempt to resolve the country’s food insecurity. Unfortunately, as the researcher states none of these measures have effectively dealt with the issue. Therefore, drastically new measures are needed.

Journal article review - Essay Example The research was undertaken in more than 15 states and the results are described in the article. The research, according to the author is conducted focusing on two primary points Before describing about the research method, the author has given ample scope to explain about the need for preparing the younger generation to face the globalized world and succeed in the same. The numerous technological advancements, the integration of several aspects of a society inside a cloud of networked community called as the internet and the urge among the developing countries to become standout performers have all been well explained, underlining the necessity to educate the students about global citizenship. The four points were brought into the picture through a review of researches done by several researchers in the past and the author has given a detailed account of each of the points. Also, the author has clearly explained the struggles of teachers who are although willing to teach about the concepts of global citizenship, find it hard to implement it because of the lack of standardized curriculum. As a result, the confidence level of the teachers too has taken a beating with respect to these concepts. A direct list of guidance regarding global citizenship is the need of hour to sustain their interest in teaching these concepts. (Rapoport, 2010) The detailed analysis of the results of the research clearly indicates how the current education system lacks the impact of a multicultural education and thus underscores the importance that needs to be placed on globalization. The continuous negligence of the social impact of globalization is a worrying factor of for the future of younger generations and it can be only improved if the importance given to the economic impacts of globalization takes the second place. Although, it has not been

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde | Summary

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde | Summary In what way does Robert Louis Stevenson build intrigue and interest the reader in ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde The book ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written in 1885 in Bournemouth, England and in January 1886 was first published by Longmans, Green Co, and is probably one of Stevensons best-known stories he wrote. The novella is a Gothic mystery story set in the 1880s in London. It is about a man named Mr. Utterson and how he discovers the truth about his friend Dr Jekyll and the horrors that occur as the mystery unfolds. The story is veiled in mist and characters uncertainty. We see the rising actions of Mr. Utterson as he attempts to discover the truth of the relationship between Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the constant theme of the ‘duality of human nature and reputation. The story begins with a trustworthy and sensible man named Mr. Utterson and his friend Mr. Enfield as they are taking their weekly stroll around an area in London. As they pass a very dilapidated door, Mr. Enfield recalls a gruesome story of physical attack. The story depicts how a man named Mr. Hyde ‘trampled calmly over a young innocent girl ‘like some dammed Juggernaut‘. This would immediately create surprise and intrigue in the readers mind. Why would anyone trample a young girl to the ground? The man pays off the girls relatives with a cheque, which was signed by a very prestigious man, named Dr Jekyll. This creates interest and intrigue to the reader and questions would present themselves in their mind. What is interesting is how Mr. Enfield describes Mr. Hyde. He says ‘He is not easy to describe. There is something wrong with his appearance, something displeasing, something downright detestable [Chapter 1]. Why can Mr. Enfield not describe Mr. Hyde? How can a man make someones blood run cold? Mr. Enfields lack of description makes a pattern in the novel, even later on Mr. Utterson cannot come up with an exact description of this man, only as a ‘troglodyte. It makes the reader find it hard to imagine w hat this character might look like or what he might not, and want to find out more about Mr. Hyde. How can it be that no one can describe him? Mr. Utterson represents the readers intrigue and tries to find out more information. The lawyer visits his friend Dr Lanyon to try to shed some light on Mr. Hyde. Dr Lanyon informs him that he does not speak to Dr Jekyll anymore because they had a scientific difference of opinion that Dr Lanyon refuses to express any detail. He says that ‘Jekyll became too fanciful for me and finds his work ‘unscientific balderdash [Chapter 2]. Questions would become apparent to the reader such as why did Dr Lanyon think that Dr Jekylls was unscientific, or did it go against any of Dr Lanyons beliefs and boundaries? Robert Louis Stevenson makes the conversation very blunt and withholds information by making Dr Lanyon very stubborn as to why they have fallen out. The fallout seems connected to Mr. Hyde even though Dr Lanyon has never heard of such a person. Another question might be ‘Why is Dr Lanyon so irritated by Dr Jekyll? Before this, it is told that they were great friends so something very significant to have broken up such a good companionship. This secrecy i s continuous throughout the whole novel. Robert Louis Stevenson gives the feeling that there is a veil over everyones eyes, even in third person we only follow the journey of Mr. Utterson and as he figures things out so does the reader. London was really the perfect setting for this novel, as during the 19th century, the industrial revolution took place and you would get very dense smog that would smother whole parts of the city for days. This interests the reader because they do not get the whole picture in one page and are eager to find out more. Fog and mist represent secrecy because they can hide what is right in front of you. The whole picture only revealed at the end of the book so you have to follow Mr. Uttersons footprints to get the whole idea. After the appalling incident, involving Sir Danvers Carew Mr. Utterson leads police officers to Mr. Hydes home in Soho it was a very misty day. ‘A great chocolate-colored pall lowered over the heavens, but the wind was continually charging and routing these embattled vapors and ‘it would be dark like the back-end of evening; and there would be a glow of rich, lurid brown, like the light of some strange conflagration [Chapter 4]. This build up to something might be a very eventful day. The suspense created makes the reader interested to find out what is hiding in Mr. Hydes house. Robert Louis Stevenson uses vivid language to captivate the readers imagination and evokes emotions such as apprehension as to what happens next. The weather also might represent how the characters are feeling themselves. The anonymous narrator just describes Mr. Uttersons point of view, only the last two chapters are in Dr Lanyon and Dr Jekylls observations, this makes Mr. Utterson the flagship c haracter of the novel. When Dr Lanyon witnesses the transformation of Dr Jekyll at the end of Chapter 9 Robert Louis Stevenson uses descriptive language to captivate the readers imagination. Robert Louis Stevenson writes ‘He put the glass to his lips and drank at one gulp. A cry followed; he reeled, staggered, clutched at the table and held on, staring with injected eyes, gasping with open mouth and ‘he seemed to swell- his face became suddenly black and the features seemed to melt and alter [Chapter 9]. Robert Louis Stevenson uses vivid language to create an intense and climax. The atmosphere is electrifying throughout the last few paragraphs of Doctor Lanyons Narrative. Stevenson uses colorful language that is very powerful to the reader. Dr Lanyon is so horrified that he dies shortly after. One subtle thing that might interest the reader is the main theme in ‘The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The theme that is stated by Dr Jekyll is ‘the duality of human nature. Dr Jekyll says that ‘man is not truly one, but truly two. The potion that Jekyll created intended to separate the elements of good and evil, and leave him with the good side, but instead it leaves him the pure evil, primitive side. Robert Louis Stevenson takes a very primal approach to Mr. Hyde and how he behaves, and illustrates primeval instincts within him. Mr. Hyde represents a very small, ugly, and hairy man that symbolizes his own moral values. Dr Jekyll says that the human soul is made up of angel and a fiend that are fighting for dominance. As the story progresses we see the ‘fiend Mr. Hyde completely overpower the ‘angel Dr Jekyll. The reader might wonder what happened to the ‘angel at the end of the book as only the ‘fiend was present. It could be anything the reader wants; Robert Louis Stevenson left that to the imagination. There are many ways to interest and intrigue a reader when writing novels. You could use descriptive words, or make something out of the ordinary happen. Robert Louis Stevenson has created a fascinating novel that is full of suspense and intrigue and has enthralled many peoples imagination, and has used powerful and evoking vocabulary to create dramatic scenes and intense atmospheres. I feel that Stevenson has written a story that creates ambiguity and curiosity to all.

Web 2.0 versus Pedagogy :: Technology, Voice Thread

Web 2.0 is an advance technology which many people used for communication such as blogs, social networking, entertainment and gaining of information about specific issue, events and people. It facilitates an interactive and collaborative application, user centered design and developing World Wide Web (Rad, 2007). This system is not originally intended for teaching a learning purpose but previously some educators was attracted to use this as an educational tool. (Peltier, 2009) Voice thread Integration of literacy and technology is very helpful for learners to fully understand the specific information and as well as in the side of educators that will improve their teaching strategy through adaptability of voice thread. Considering the advancement of the technologies and the knowledge of each educator and the willingness of the learners this progress will not be impossible to achieve as desired. Contributories in making the voice thread effective to the users depending on their capabilities to adapt the process of spreading information and interaction towards feedback mechanism will surely be manageable to which all queries are given that of enough attention. Voice Thread is an online tool which is not originally intended as a classroom tool but in 2008, Burden made a study in which Voice Thread can be used as an educational tool for enhancement of teaching and student learning. This kind of online application showcases a new designed learning tool that engages students to be motivated in exploring and gaining knowledge through video collaborative conversation, images, power point, and audio files. Voice Thread has the ability to securely accommodate learners not only to become readers but to become participants also. (Freyer, 2008) Voice Thread allows interaction within the user and the participants thru exchanging of comments by oral or textual. This application also allows privacy of documents being posted for which you can choose only the audiences or participants which can view your post. To attract learners to be more interested, Voice Thread also allows images or videos to be posted for a better presentation (Anderson, 2010). For better audio comments, Lofton (2008) suggested the usage of Audacity which is a free downloadable application that allows editing and volume adjustments. Another suggestion is to use a better quality microphone (Lofton, 2008). Voice Thread might pose an accessibility problem for those students with low bandwidth. In addition, viewing the application on a mobile phone can be difficult because it employs Flash to deliver content. Relationships in Love Medicine

Rachel Robinson April 15, 2013 Multicultural Literature Christian Davis Relationships in Love Medicine Love Medicine is a series of short stories that was written by Lousie Erdrich in 1984 and covers a time span of 60 years. Love Medicine is set in North Dakota on an Indian reservation known as Turtle Mountain. Although the novel is fiction, the cultural, social, and economical aspects depicted are very realistic. Hertha Sweet Wong describes Love Medicine as â€Å"Metafiction, ironically self-conscious in its mode of telling, concerned as much with exploiting the process of storytelling as with the story itself. (35) Erdrich’s Love Medicine is not so much based on plot as on several key relationships. These relationships include; the love triangle between Marie, Nector, and Lulu; June and how her death made an impact on other characters and Lipsha a key figure to understanding the novel. June is introduced at the beginning of the novel by telling the story of her death. Altho ugh June is dead through the entire novel her memory lives on as her family and friends recall memories they shared with June and even some of their own memories throughout the novel. June will figure throughout the novel as a touchstone for the other characters† (Sweet Wong 57) June’s death affected all of the characters in the novel. June is â€Å"†¦the erratic and once vivacious beauty of the family†¦Ã¢â‚¬ as described by Sweet Wong. (38) June left behind her husband Gordie and her son King, along with her lover Gerry whom she also had a son with named Lipsha. Every character in the book is impacted by June’s death. June is said to be â€Å"the catalyst for the narrations that follow, stories that trace the intricate and often antagonistic relationships in the two families from which she came† (Sweet Wong 38).Junes son, King, buys a car with the money he receives from his mother’s death. The car is a shiny new sports car, which the o thers do not go near to because they are afraid that it is a ghost. June’s death also affected her niece Albertine’s relationship with her family. Albertine’s mother did not invite Albertine to the wedding but instead sent her a letter explaining to her that her Aunt June was dead and already buried. Albertine was very upset with her mother and refused to speak with her because of the way she handled the situation.Lipsha Morrissey is June’s abandoned son and is arguably the key figure to understanding the whole novel. Lipsha is the one who makes the love medicine, from which the title of the novel comes from. Lipsha’s first attempt at using the love medicine was for his grandparents who were on the verge of splitting because his grandfather, Nector, does not love his grandmother, Marie, anymore. Lipsha fails in getting a blessing from the priest and a nun and therefore makes the medicine incorrectly. He then tries to give it to his grandfather but he refuses to take it suspecting foul play.Lipsha knows that the medicine will not work unless both his grandmother and grandfather take the medicine so his grandmother, who also wanted to resolve the relationship, forces her husband to eat the heart. She forces it down his throat and Lipsha’s grandfather ends up chocking and dying from it. This causes Lipsha to realize that his meddling with the love medicine was very dangerous and not something to take lightly. Lipsha is a key figure to the novel because he shows how the love medicine is very dangerous.Lipsha learned a lesson through his actions of meddling with the love medicine. Lipsha shows us what happens when the love medicine is misused. â€Å"I could tell him it was all my fault for playing with power I did not understand. Maybe he'd forgive me and rest in peace† (212-13). Lipsha acts based upon how he feels rather than what is logical. He really understands the meaning and purpose of life. Lipsha sees how his grandmother, Marie, is hurting and helps her out. Nector has a confusing and complex relationship with two women, Lulu and Marie that unfolds throughout the novel.According to Hertha Sweet Wong, â€Å"Nector also articulates the strategy he will follow throughout the course of his life: he goes consistently with the current never fighting very strongly if at all† (62). Although Nector married Marie he loves Lulu and cannot get pass these feeling for her. Nector’s marriage with Marie is pretty happy until he realizes he is still in love with Lulu. Nector begins having an affair with Lulu that lasts for five years. Although the affair is intended for Nector to finally get what he has yearned for his whole life it suddenly turns into a complicated mess. What started as a carefree affair with the love of his life turned into a strict scheduling of when he as to see Lulu and get time away from Marie. The relationship became serious and turned into something that Nector need ed. He made Lulu into what seemed like a second wife and turned this care free love into a chore. Nector became controlling over Lulu and wanted her to only be his. Everything increased in complexity when Lulu had Nectors child. Nector gets fed up with the double relationships tries to leave Lulu. Once he realizes he cannot bear to be without her he decides to tell Marie he is leaving her for Lulu.To add to the complexity of the situation, Nector accidentally burns down Lulu’s house in the middle of all of this. With the mess of events Nector caused he ends up staying with Marie until he is out in a retirement home at an old age. At this retirement home Nector has very poor memory. Lipsha tells us of how Nector begins an affair with Lulu once again at the retirement home. Marie is desperate for Nector to remain faithful to her and searches for a way for him to be forced to. Her solution is to ask for help from Lipsha to make love medicine that will keep Nector faithful.Lipsha messes up in the process of making the medicine and Nector ends up dying from it. This seemed to be the only way to ultimately resolve the conflict between the women. â€Å"Love Medicine is a powerful novel. It develops hard, clear pictures of Indian people struggling to hold their lives together, hanging on to the edge of the reservation or fighting to make a place for themselves in bleak mid-western cities or devising ingenious ways to make more break for freedom, but its most remarkable quality is how it manages to give new form to oral tradition† (Sweet Wong 42).The characters in Love Medicine intermingled and interacted with each other in a way that takes priority over the plot of the novel. June was not alive throughout the novel but her death and figure played a very significant role in the novel. â€Å"June’s loss will underscore each character’s sense of identity when the tribal community and, concomitantly, each character’s potential for survi val† (Sweet Wong 57) Lipsha is a very important, if not the most important, character in the novel.Lipsha was the one who made the love medicine and intermingled in the other people’s love lives. Nector’s love triangle with Lulu and Marie is a complicating mess that is a key part to the novel. Nector was never satisfied with what he got and always wanted more. In the end he could not have what he wanted and ended up with neither of the women. All Marie wanted was for Nector to stay faithful to her but Nector’s heart belonged to Lulu.
